Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."
